SIGNS

Before children can read, they begin to recognize and respond to physical signs and cues in their environment. We can foster the connection between symbols and what they represent by giving children opportunities to experience and interact with signs, symbols, warnings and other visual messaging – and by talking with them about their meanings and purpose.

This theme will introduce new signs and cues to our Sweet Peas and will reinforce some familiar ones as well. Children see many visual cues int heir environment every day such as unlock and lock symbols on the buttons on car windows and doors, elevator buttons and the flag raised on the mailbox. They see sidewalk lines painted on the street, “Do not feed the birds” signs at the lake and lightning bolts on the tag of the blowdryer.

We are going to have a great time learning about signs and visual cues! We will have fun moving around our gymnastics classroom, following traffic signs, arrows and other symbols that represent directional cues. We will follow the bases around the baseball diamond and hop over speed bumps along our bumpy path. We will stop at stop signs, crawl under tunnels, make bridges, demonstrate bear crossings and pause for a minute to (properly) feed the ducks. We have lots of important and fun things to learn from the signs and cues all around us!

Warm Up Song

The song for this week is S.T.O.P. by Patty Shukla. This week, we will be following along to the directions given and utilizing the stop/go paddle at the iPad bookshelf.

With the STOP sign, we are fostering the connection between symbols and what they represent – seeing the sign and doing the action “STOP”!

Skill of the Week

The skill of the week is the Tuck position! This is a body position where the knees and hips are bent and drawn into the chest with hands holding the knees. This body position is used for forward rolls to rotate faster.

You can practice the Tuck at the following stations:

Beam: Have the do a safety landing after the beams and roll down into a tuck position
Bar: Students can start in a tuck position at “Lookout Tower” before leaning back to go into their straddle
Vault: The students can practice a tuck position at the Slippery When Wet station
Floor: Have students hold their tuck position after their forward roll at “Armadillo Xing”

Warm Up Stations

  1. Bridge Ahead: modified bridge for 3&4 year olds, bridge for 5&6 year olds.
  2. Two-way traffic: chasse back and forth, cross country ski jumps
  3. Demolition: Handstand. Students will perform a lever and knock the foam blocks down, stack them back up, and repeat. Make sure we are working on perfecting our form for the older kids and encourage the little ones to work on their balance!
  4. One Way: crab walks, inchworms
  5. Slippery When Wet: jumping jacks, mountain climbers
  6. Steep Incline: rolling ab rocker up and down the hill

Who Let a Zoo Loose?

This theme focuses on wild animals their special characteristics and their habitats. Animals provide a strong developmentally appropriate theme for children or all ages and animals are a tangible (truly living and breathing) subject that is relevant and interesting. Learning about animals helps children learn about how other creatures look, move and live. This lesson plan provides comparative thinking opportunities as we guide our students to perform activities like animals! Our sweet peas will have fun flapping their wings like birds, flipping those dolphin tails,  flexed arm hanging like a monkey and spraying like a skunk!

Warm Up Song

Skill of the Week

This week, we will be working on safety rolls. A safety roll allows gymnasts to fall safely by allowing them to absorb the impact of a fall over a greater area of their bodies. To perform a safety roll, students make a fist with their hands, pull their arms in toward their body and across their chest, and roll back into a tuck position.
You can substitute candlesticks for safety rolls in the warm-up, floor station, and vault station. For the bars and beam, please add a side station!

Warm Up Stations

  1. Bear walks: students walk on their hands and feet, trying to keep knees straight, in and out of the cones.
  2. Alligator crawl under the bridge: Similar to an army crawl, students will lay on their belly and stay low to the ground. They will alternate using their right arm and left leg, and their left arm and right leg to move forward under the bridge.
  3. Frog hops from hoop to hoop: Students will start in a deep squat with their hands on the ground. They will jump as high as they can from one hoop to the next with their hands and feet leaving the ground at the same time.
  4. Donkey Kicks: Students will start with their hands on the floor (or on a block if needed for the younger kids) with their feet on a spot marker. They will jump their feet into the air at the same time, returning to the spot marker. For the older 5 and 6 peas, feel free to work on their levers and L-handstand kicks.
  5. Dolphin candle sticks: Have the kids sit on a spot marker, or on a panel mat. They will lean onto their back, bring their legs straight up towards the ceiling, and return to a seated position. Students should aim to no use their hands to lay back or to push themselves back up. For the older 5 and 6 Peas, you can have them start standing, squat into a seated position, perform their candlestick, and stand back up.

Fall Session Week 9; Sunday, October 23rd – 29th

Skill of the Week

The skill of the week is a donkey kick! Start by bending your knees and placing your palms flat on the floor so they’re shoulder-width apart. Then, shift your weight onto your hands by leaning forward, and lift your heels so only your toes are touching the floor. Repeat numerous times, keeping the head neutral and working to achieve a straight, slightly hollow body shape. This drill can be done in the tuck position, with progression to a pike, and then finally with straight legs.
You can find a donkey kick at each station:
Bars: add a side station
Floor: Skunk Sprays
Beam: Can add a side station, or have them practice on the beams. Ones and Two Peas should use the red balance beam if they do. 3-6 can use any beam.
Vault: Donkey Kicks

Fall Session Week 8; October 16th – October 22nd

Lesson Theme; Happily Ever After

This theme incorporates classic nursery rhymes which provide children with early experiences with literature and language development. The theme is vibrant with characters, colors, stories, rhythmic language and fun! Your sweet peas will be busy with itsy-bitsy spiders on the bar, tipping teapots on the floor, hopping on the wheels of the bus and other fun activities that incorporate nursery rhymes into our educational gymnastics classroom. Get ready to count your ducks, jump with the frogs and laugh at the moon!

Skill of the Week

Our skill of the week is a handstand. To do a handstand, hands are flat on the floor, shoulder width apart, and the body completely extended and straight, legs together.
The handstand will be done at all the same stations/spots as the l-handstand last week. Encourage the kids to extend their legs higher, so their body is more straight from the l-handstand!
Vault: set up a side station for all ages.
Bars: set up a side station for all ages.
Floor: Substitute the second forward/straddle roll with a wall l-handstand. 4-6 Peas already has a wall handstand and l-handstand station set up.
Beam: 1-3 and younger 4 peas can do it at a side station. You can challenge the older 4 peas – 6 peas by having them practicing kicking up with their hands on the balance beam (facing the beam perpendicularly with feet on the floor, doing a lever by placing hands on the beam, then kicking their feet up) .

Warm Up Song for One and Two Peas

This version of Head Shoulders Knees and Toes replaces a word with a clap each time through. In doing this, the kids are working on imitation (as they copy their grown up and teacher when clapping) as well as their listening skills by following along and clapping when needed!

Warm Up Activity for Three, Four, Five and Six

This will be the “closing activity” in the lesson plans, Little Bo Peep Catches her Sheep! This game is similar to freeze tag. There will be mats set up around the warm-up area. You can have students move around the front of the gym in different ways (skipping, crab walk, bear walk, etc.). When the teacher says “There’s My Sheep!” students will try to get to the safety zone on a mat, if the teacher tags them they have to hold their lunge position until another student “saves” them by giving them a high five!
